All PlayStation 3 owners may finally be able to enjoy backward compatibility.
Sony Japan recently filed a patent for an external "new generation console to previous generation console" adapter, Siliconera reports. The schematic for the device shows it has its own processor, a DVD decoder/emulator, sound processor, and graphic processor.
As with all patents, nothing is guaranteed. Sony filed a patent last year for a new cell-based emulation engine that could play PlayStation 2 games via firmware update, but nothing has materialized from that so far.
Sony removed backwards compatibility from the PS3 back in 2007, and has repeatedly stated there are no plans to re-introduce the feature. The company seems to be set on re-releasing its greatest hits collection of PS2 titles on Blu-ray discs at retail.
We pinged Sony to see if they could offer any clarification.
