The latest nugget about the sequel to Star Trek comes from one of the least fanboy-friendly outlets there is, but their report suggests the gender and species of a new character in the film.
In an article about the iPad's impact on Hollywood, The New York Times says Star Trek 2 scribe Roberto Orci had a "meeting [last month in Hollywood] with the producers J.J. Abrams, Damon Lindelof and Bryan Burk, and his fellow writer Alex Kurtzman, jump-started the discussion with an iPad slide show, showing stills from the first film, snapshots of potential locations and a photo of a suggested actress for one of the roles. On the woman's photo, he had used his iPad to paint on a Vulcan ear."
A Vulcan woman, eh? Could she be T'Pau, the only person ever to turn down a seat on the Federation Council? Or maybe Star Trek: Enterprise's sexy T'Pol? A very young future Lt. Saavik? A younger version of Kim Catrall's Valeris? Or perhaps Spock's betrothed T'Pring from the original series episode "Amok Time" (that sure would throw a wrench in his relationship with Uhura)? Or perhaps it's an entirely new character.
